Lube, Explained (Finally)

The OCA Editors · · 5 min read

Three frosted bottles on dark marble

Water, silicone, oil, warming — what’s the difference, and which one belongs on your nightstand?

If you only buy one essential, make it lubricant. Here’s a quick tour so you can choose with confidence.

Water-based: the all-rounder

Compatible with every toy material, easy to clean up and endlessly versatile. It can dry out faster, so keep the bottle close.

Silicone-based: long-lasting

Silicone lube stays slippery for longer and works well in water. It can degrade some silicone toys, so check the toy manufacturer’s guidance before pairing them.

Oil-based: for massage

Oils are lovely for massage. Check the product and condom packaging before using oil with condoms, as oil can weaken latex.

Warming and tingling

These add a sensation on contact. Patch test first and read the product’s directions.
